New My Bloody Valentine material may be just around the corner
What feels like a chasm of time ago almost as long as the band’s indefinite hiatus, Kevin Shields told numerous music publications that My Bloody Valentine would have a new album. “We are 100 percent going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something,” he said.
Shields had previously been working on material for a follow-up to the band’s landmark “Loveless” record in the late ’90s, but the sessions were ultimately shelved indefinitely, with Shields later saying upon returning to the material, “I realized that all that stuff I was doing in 1996 and 1997 was a lot better than I thought.”
That was in 2007 when the band unexpectedly reunited and started playing shows again. Considering the record was apparently three quarters complete, it felt like an MBV record would be ready for summer ’08 consumption. No such luck took place and it seemed like a new record from the shoegaze quartet would never happen.
That is until NOW. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, Kevin Shields finally shed some light on the supposed new My Bloody Valentine album: “I’ve always said that we were always going to make a record again. You never know, we might finish it really quickly, and it might be up in a few months! I tend to work really quickly, suddenly, and I might be willing to do that right now. We’ll see!”
Wow — an extremely enthusiastic demeanor from a man who has a reputation for being a recluse. Until said record sees the light of day, we can luckily keep ourselves busy with the band’s upcoming reissues which will feature a nice remastering as well as a chance to hear rare and unheard tracks (I’ve personally been waiting my whole life to get a decent copy of the “You Made Me Realize” EP in some shape or form).
