Matt Groening finally tells us which Springfield the Simpsons inhabit
Which Springfield is the Simpsons’ Springfield? It might seem like a silly question, but fans have asked again and again over the past 25 years. Of the almost 40 Springfields across the U.S., from Alabama to Vermont to California, residents of each tend to suspect that their Springfield is, naturally, the Springfield.
Well Matt Groening has put the misplaced pride of some 38 towns of Springfield to rest. The show’s creator told the Smithsonian:
“Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show ‘Father Knows Best’ took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”
So there you have it: Cartoon Springfield is Springfield, Oregon, of Groening’s childhood. It only seems fitting that “The Simpsons'” town should belong to them. And I suppose as an extension, Springfield, Oregon belongs now belongs to us all.
