The Flaming Lips get in the ‘Guinness Book’; release new track

For all Jack White’s eccentric ambitions to land a spot in the famous “Guinness World Records” book, the equally ambitious Flaming Lips managed to actually land a spot in its pages by outdoing Jay-Z’s previously held record for most cities performed in on a single day during their MTV OMA roadtrip.

Of the feat, Wayne Coyne said in a press release:

“To be able to pick up this silly drinking book– after all, Guinness is a beer– this funny book that when I was growing up was a curiosity. To be published alongside the man who ate 22 pounds of his own boogers, beside the woman with the longest toenails or perhaps even to be published beside an individual who has had maybe 1000 cockroaches stuffed into their ears… that, to me, would be one of life’s absurd joys.”

Gross — but effectively reflective.

In other Flaming Lips news, the band is still dealing with repercussions of Erykah Badu’s recent flipout over the supposedly premature release of the naked, blood-and-milk-spattered music video for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face.” The CD and digital release of “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends” came out on Tuesday but the band apparently plans to recut the song with The Dresden Dolls’ frontwoman Amanda Palmer and may even do a new video. It would be incredibly hilarious if they did a shot-for-shot remake with Palmer immersed in the goo-filled tub in place of Nayrok Badu.

Oh yeah, The Flaming Lips also have a new song and apparently an even newer record on the way towards the end of the year. The Lips were joined by Phantogram in Biloxi, Mississippi for a performance of the dirgey “You Lust.” Check out a clip of the song below.
