McDonald’s will shut down for Morrissey concert

Thousands of lugubrious LA music fans won’t have to suffer the insult of the meat industry when they go to see Morrissey at his highly anticipated Staples Center show on March 1. The godfather of emo has done what no other musician has succeeded in doing before and convinced the Staples Center to go all vegetarian for his show. As such, the McDonald’s in the venue has agreed to shut down for the night of the concert.

According to Billboard, Paul McCartney, another famously outspoken vegetarian, made the same request and was denied. But Morrissey was able to muscle it through. Paul McCartney tends to be pretty agreeable, however. Cross Morrissey, and you never know what the guy will say. Then again, McD’s may just be betting that Morrissey won’t actually show up and play the concert, which given his health record of late, seems about 50/50.

It’s been 28 years since The Smiths released “Meat Is Murder,” and Morrissey is still fighting the good fight. In past years he’s said that Coachella offered to go 100% vegetarian as incentive for a Smiths reunion there.

“I don’t look upon it as a victory for me, but a victory for the animals,” Morrissey said in a not-at-all melodramatic statement.

Morrissey is set to play Jimmy Kimmel Live! next week and resume touring the following day.

UPDATE: Apparently the Staples center is not actually going fully veg for the Morrissey show, but is rather adding vegetarian options.
