Daft Punk unmasked: Photo of the band without helmets leaks online

New York EDM duo The Knocks got in what one imagines is a metric ton of trouble Wednesday evening when they posted a photo of Daft Punk without their helmets in the headquarters of their label, Columbia Records.

Shortly thereafter they took it down from their Facebook page and replaced it with the message “GUESS WE WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO POST THAT PIC :X” but by then it was on Imgur. Here’s the pic:

Just when you thought the hype and intrigue around “Random Access Memories” couldn’t get any more fevered, we get an unmasking to kick things up to another level. In fact, I’d almost be willing to bet Daft Punk and their label were in on it. I mean, how do you not know you’re not supposed to post pics of Daft Punk without their helmets on? Isn’t that like the first rule of EDM Club—don’t unmask Daft Punk?

The original message they posted was titled “Daft Punk playing champagne beer pong (without helmets on) in the Sony offices.” Gawker also confirmed independently with someone who has spent time with the band that it is indeed Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. If The Knocks really posted it unauthorized, they must have got one hell of a reaming.
