Brilliant weirdo takes selfies in front of people making out in public

There’s a new blog called Wingmanning (also on Instagram), where friends Drew Phillips and Scott Cleveland collect photos of Phillips looking incredibly bored in front of strangers who are making out in public. It’s a simple concept that’s hilariously creepy.

I caught up with Phillips to talk a little bit about the blog.

Where are you based and what do you do for a living?
Scott Cleveland and I do it together. We are are in Los Angeles and work at an ad agency called Chiat Day. I’m a strategist. He is a copywriter.

What inspired you to start the blog?
It was really just kind of a reaction to all these photos we had. We started taking them a couple years ago, and they made our friends laugh. Once we got enough, we decided to make Wingmanning.

Has anyone ever noticed you taking a photo and complained? Have there been any fights?
There have definitely been a few awkward interactions. I used to be a bit worried about it, but I realized that they would probably just go after the photographer and not me… which eased my mind. I’m also faster than Scott, which is a plus.

Have any tips for taking the perfect Wingmanning shot?
Tip 1: I think its all about the expression. The dryer the expression the better the photo.

Tip 2: If you have to be in a Wingmanning photo, try to not be the one who is standing alone looking weird.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I’d like to thank all the couples who made this blog possible. I think about a lot of them from time to time and hope they are still together.
