Map shows every school shooting since Sandy Hook

A gunman opened fire at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon on Tuesday, killing at least one student before being killed by authorities. It was the 37th school shooting of 2014 following the UC Santa Barbara shooting over Memorial Day and the Seattle Public University shooting last week.

Today’s shooting marks the 74th since the Sandy Hook massacre by Adam Lanza, and the shootings roll on unabated. About half of the 37 school shootings this year have resulted in fatalities. Everytown For Gun Safety, a new gun safety advocacy group, compiled all of them into one comprehensive list, and Mark Gongloff mapped them to give us a sense of how school shootings spread across our country.

As you can see they’re not restricted to the Pennsylvania rust belt where President Obama famously said people “cling to religion and guns.” They happen all over the country—Georgia is the biggest offender.

As the gun debate rolls on the only solution we seem to be able to come up with are things like bulletproof blankets to keep kids safe during school shootings. Have we just resigned ourselves to school shootings as part of American life? Overall gun homicides have declined over the last two decades but still kill 11,000 Americans every year.
