Ferguson police crushed Michael Brown memorial and let a dog piss on it

In case you were not already horrified enough by everything happening in Ferguson, Missouri lo these past few weeks, a new report by Mark Follman of Mother Jones claims that police officers purposely desecrated a memorial in the spot where Michael Brown died, going so far as to allow a dog to piss on it, and to purposely drive over it and crush it with their cars.

Via Mother Jones:

As darkness fell on Canfield Drive on August 9, a makeshift memorial sprang up in the middle of the street where Michael Brown’s body had been sprawled in plain view for more than four hours. Flowers and candles were scattered over the bloodstains on the pavement. Someone had affixed a stuffed animal to a streetlight pole a few yards away. Neighborhood residents and others were gathering, many of them upset and angry.

Soon, police vehicles reappeared, including from the St. Louis County Police Department, which had taken control of the investigation. Several officers emerged with dogs. What happened next, according to several sources, was emblematic of what has inflamed the city of Ferguson, Missouri, ever since the unarmed 18-year-old was gunned down: An officer on the street let the dog he was controlling urinate on the memorial site.

The incident was related to me separately by three state and local officials who worked with the community in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. One confirmed that he interviewed an eyewitness, a young woman, and pressed her on what exactly she saw. “She said that the officer just let the dog pee on it,” that official told me. “She was very distraught about it.” The identity of the officer who handled the dog and the agency he was with remain unclear.

Seriously? They need to find out who that damned officer is and he needs to be fired immediately. As do every single one of the officers who, it is mentioned later in the article, purposely drove over the memorial with their cars. This is the exact kind of disdain for human life that led to Michael Brown and other unarmed individuals being murdered by police. This is the worst kind of callousness and cruelty–it is practically psychopathic, in fact–and it does not belong on our police forces.

I would not do that to a memorial of my worst enemy. I don’t even want to know how someone could have it in them to do something so awful. It’s just sickening.

I can’t imagine a situation where that sort of thing could possibly be considered acceptable to anyone. I don’t know how these officers sleep at night, knowing that they did something so disgusting to a makeshift memorial of a teenage boy lost too soon. Even if, for some reason, they thought the shooting was justified, they could at least have some respect for a grieving mother, for a grieving community, enough to not do something so horrible.

In conclusion, fuck the police.
