Method Man on Wu-Tang’s 88-year copyright: ‘Fuck that album!’
Countless opinions have been voiced over the past year as the saga of the single-copy Wu-Tang Clan album has gone through various iterations of absurdity on its way to being auctioned off via Paddle8 later this year. From fans finding themselves frustrated that the final recording of the group will not be available to those who made them famous, to critics wondering if the unheard music is actually worth the hoped $5 million, few people aside from those who stand to profit think it’s a good idea. But now there is splintering within those on the album, as when asked his opinion on the spectacle it has become, Method Man said, “Fuck that album!”
Apparently, Johnny Blaze was completely unaware of the 88-year copyright restriction that the winning bidder will have to adhere to, and he hit the nail on the head when he told XXL, “You have to wait 88 years to hear some shit? By that time, it’s going to be fuckin’ played out. If it ain’t already played out. I hope that’s a rumor. Whoever said that, that shit is fuckin’ stupid.”
He continued, saying that he was very much in favor of the single-copy concept, but what it has turned into is “ridiculous.” As he pointed out, “When music can’t be music and y’all turning it into something else, fuck that. Give it to the people, if they want to hear the shit, let them have it.” Method Man even went as far to say that this album “ain’t making nobody rich or poor” and that RZA and his cohorts should “stop playing with the public.”
Since “Once Upon A Time In Shaolin” was announced, RZA has been doing everything possible to make it seem like an art project of sorts as opposed to just another record. However, the elongated process and heavy guard of the sound, combined with the silly 88-year caveat has turned it into nothing other than pretentious.
Thankfully for Wu-Tang fans, Meth mentioned that the new album “Methlab” is in the works and that the record will be filled with local, Staten Island talent. He finished by saying that,”It ’s the Persona Non Grata that holds brothers back. It’s always the Persona Non Grata.” RZA – take note.
