Kevin Smith confirms ‘Mallrats’ sequel

Teased just days ago on Twitter, Kevin Smith has turned an internet rumor into reality. The director confirmed on radio show Rock102 “Mornings with Shmony & Carolina” that the script for “Mallrats 2″ has been in the works, and the film is set for production in May 2016.

Although the film was considered a box-office failure, grossing $2.1 million on a $6 million budget, it found its audience through movie rentals (remember those?) and lame references online.

As for those skeptical of the viability and relevance of these characters decades after “Mallrats” initial release, know that Smith isn’t oblivious to this. He simply doesn’t care: “Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?’…Nobody’s clamoring for a ‘Mallrats’ sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”

No word on if the original cast will return in any capacity, but bet money that the glue that holds the View Askew universe together, the domestic partnership that is Jay and Silent Bob, will be there.
