Johnny Marr covers Depeche Mode’s ‘I Feel You’

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has been quite active these past few years. He’s played the Smiths songs we all want to hear, he’s released some solid solo material, and now, as a special Record Store Day gift to us, he’s recorded a cover of Depeche Mode’s 1993 classic “I Feel You,” complete with a music video of Marr and his bandmates looking cool as they perform the song in a sensual black room.

Depeche Mode fans will be pleased to note that it’s a pretty faithful cover. Marr kept the original’s understated swagger, switching out some of the sexy synths for sexy guitars. He also kept the British accent and added some embellishments here and there without going for any unnecessary solos. It’s hardly a revelatory reinvention, but it works.

The 7″ from whence this song comes is due out April 18, with a B-side of…wait for it…”Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.” In the meantime, the sizable Venn diagram of Smiths and Depeche Mode fans can content themselves with this very by-the-rock-and-roll-book video.
