Jamie xx shares video for ‘Loud Places’

Anyone missing the understated sexiness of English synth-pop band The xx will be pleased to know Jamie xx’s solo album “In Colour” is due to be released June 1 on Young Turks, and thus far it sounds (spoiler alert!) a lot like The xx. It features honey-voiced The xx vocalist Romy Madley Croft and bassist Oliver Sim, as well as Four Tet, Young Thug, and Popcaan. Mr. xx has already shared a few songs in advance of the big day, and now he’s released a music video for lead single “Loud Places.”

Directed by Simon Halsall & JB Babenhausen, the clip follows childhood BFFs Jamie and Romy as they ride the tube and skateboard around London in their signature black outfits. They seem like they’re having fun; around 2:20, they even each crack a rare smile. (Romy tries to hide hers behind her hair, but it’s there.) In a nod to the album’s title, the video ends with a shower of colorful confetti, or as Andrew WK calls it, the partier version of snow. It goes nicely with the Romy’s soulful vocals about taking someone higher than he or she could have gone without her, and makes me wonder if it’s actually a platonic love song meant to be shared between besties.
