Fred Thomas solo LP features Radiator Hospital, Andrew W.K.

Fred Thomas, frontman and main songwriter for experimental indie pop band Saturday Looks Good to Me, is releasing his first solo album, entitled “All Are Saved.” The album is due April 7 on Polyvinyl Records and features guest spots from Radiator Hospital’s Sam Cook-Parrott and Andrew W.K.

Thomas has already released three early singles off the album (two featuring the aforementioned Cook-Parrott and W.K.) and fans familiar with Saturday Looks Good to Me’s poppy but often adventurous sound will find plenty to like about these tracks.

“Bad Blood” starts out with nearly a minute of gorgeous reverse reverb (ala My Bloody Valentine) before harsher synths, a steady clipping beat, and church organ right up front in the mix kick the song into something that reminded this listener of “Whiter Shade of Pale”–that is if Procol Harum sang about stepbrothers chasing each other around with staple guns.

“Cops Don’t Care Pt. II” is tailor made for Cook-Parrott’s crooning, multi-tracked background vocals. It’s a similarly beautiful song, with Thomas considering how life can seem so “incredibly long, like a kiss on a bridge between two nervous-ass kids terrified of doing everything wrong.” But the track’s lyrics have plenty of teeth. “Can you conceive of a living wage?” Thomas wonders, almost rhetorically, in the song’s opening lines. He seems to know the answer, describing a modern landscape filled with law that “don’t give a fuck about us” and pavement “always hungry for those drops of your blood, for that knee in your back.”

You can listen to all three songs, and also check out dates and venues for Thomas’ upcoming tour, below.
