Trump can’t be sexist because he hired Ivanka, says Ivanka
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has had to deal with charges of sexism for pretty much his entire campaign. Now, in total fairness, Bernie Sanders also had to deal with people crying sexism for months, often times for the simple act of daring to disagree with Hillary Clinton. Fortunately, there’s been plenty of in-depth reporting about Trump’s treatment of women, so the claims against him hold up way better.
On Monday, Trump’s daughter Ivanka defended him against such accusations, saying “he’s absolutely not a sexist.”
“There’s no way I could be the person I am today if my father was a sexist,” Ivanka tells CNN’s Gloria Borger. “I would not be one of his senior most executives and I would not be working shoulder to shoulder with my brothers. I would be working for my brothers, if at all.”
My dad hired me so therefore he can’t be sexist isn’t the best route to take here. You can be a fan of your own daughter and still look down on women in general. Nepotism doesn’t change that. Ivanka wasn’t done, though.
“I think actions ultimately speak louder than words,” she continued. “My father has forty years of history of employing women.” Following anti-discrimination laws again doesn’t mean you aren’t sexist. Trump does have a history of hiring women to high-ranking positions. Unfortunately, he also has a history of treating those women poorly by making comments about their weight.
He also seems to think the generosity he extends to his children by providing them jobs should not be extended to his wives.
“You know, he calls men some pretty rough names, too,” Ivanka said of her father’s penchant for giving people terrible nicknames. Ah, the classic Lebowski defense: He’s not wrong, he’s just an asshole.
