Check out Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson in ‘Urban Myths’

If Hollywood loves anything more than movies about Hollywood, it’s casting white actors to play characters who aren’t white. Naturally, this is just what they did with Michael Jackson’s character in “Urban Myths” because LOL he bleached his skin and had tons of plastic surgery! The movie seems to be an anthology of various myths about famous people, from Hitler to Bob Dylan, with a stacked cast of U.K. stars like Eddie Marsan, Aidan Gillen, Iwan Rheon, and Rupert Grint, but the 20-minute segment about Jackson and his purported post-9/11 road trip with Liz Taylor (Stockard Channing!!) and Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) looks cringe-worthy at best.

The initial announcement about Fiennes’ casting garnered quite the (earned) backlash. At the time, Fiennes told AFPTV, “I was shocked that they would come to me for the casting. You have to ask them as to why they would want to cast me.” He added, “The decision with the casting and the producers — I wrangled with it, I was confused and shocked at what might come my way, and I knew the sensitivity, especially to Michael’s fans and to Michael’s family. It doesn’t negate who he was.”

“Urban Myths” will air in the U.K. on January 19 on Sky Arts.
