Trump wants Theresa May to ‘fix’ a ‘better reception’ before he goes to the UK
Donald Trump reportedly told British Prime Minister Theresa May that he won’t come the UK until she could promise him a warm welcome from the British press.
“I still want to come, but I’m in no rush,” Trump told May, according to The Sun. “So, if you can fix it for me, it would make things a lot easier. When I know I’m going to get a better reception, I’ll come, and not before.”
Trump agreed to make an official state visit to the UK shortly after his inauguration, but no date was ever set. The theoretical visit has somehow already managed to hit a few snags, and has been delayed until 2018. It was previously reported that Trump was considering putting the trip off because he didn’t want to deal with massive protests. Now, if this transcript is to be believed, he is turning his focus on the media.
“I haven’t had great coverage out there lately, Theresa,” Trump said.
“Well, you know what the British press are like,” May responded.
Trump hasn’t endeared himself to the British people or media, especially in the wake of a terrorist attack in London when the president chose to spend the weekend attacking Mayor Sadiq Khan. Millions of people along with Khan himself have suggested that maybe Trump shouldn’t even be invited to visit if that’s what his attitude is going to be.
For the record, the British prime minister does not have complete control over the British media and cannot force them to say nice things about Donald Trump. Trump’s alleged request is absurd.
May apparently tried to explain this to Trump by telling him, “We are not North Korea.”
Maybe they can just print out a bunch of fake newspapers for Trump that all say really nice things about him. How difficult could it possibly be to fool Trump into thinking they’re real? And would he even care? We’re talking about a guy who hung up a fake TIME cover in his golf clubs.
Even if this conversation never happened, there is no reason to think this plan won’t work.
