Sessions threatens to subpoena press over leaks to make Trump happy

On Friday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared before the White House press corps to tell them he’s going to throw them all in jail unless they start revealing who in the White House keeps leaking embarrassing information on President Trump.

“I have listened to career investigators and prosecutors about how to most successfully investigate and prosecute these matters,” Sessions said.”At their suggestion, one of the things we are doing is reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas.”

He continued:

“We respect the important role that the press plays and will give them respect, but it is not unlimited. They cannot place lives at risk with impunity. We must balance their role with protecting our national security and the lives of those who serve in our intelligence community, the armed forces, and all law abiding Americans.”

It seems Thursday leaked transcripts of embarrassing phone calls with President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia were the last straw for the administration, as they finally revealed the full dearth of Trump’s ability to do the one thing he’s always claimed to be good at: negotiate. Sessions is no doubt eager to get back in his boss’s good graces and so he is talking a big game about waging war on our nation’s First Amendment.

While Thursday’s transcripts were technically classified, and have been criticized for threatening foreign leader’s ability to speak freely with the president, it’s hard to say how they may have “put lives at risk.” And the content of the calls made it clear that all these leaks are likely being motivated by the very real possibility that our president is totally batshit and not capable of doing his job. Which is truly the greater threat to our national security?
