Trump calls critics of his Puerto Rico response ‘politically motivated ingrates’

Donald Trump on Sunday morning continued his feud with Puerto Ricans, and more specifically the mayor of San Juan, all because Carmen Yulín Cruz went on TV Friday night and begged for better disaster relief in order to keep people alive. Shame on her.

“We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico,” Trump tweeted on Sunday. “Outside of the Fake News or politically motivated ingrates, people are now starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by FEMA and our great Military. All buildings now inspected or safety. Thank you to the Governor of P.R. and to all of those who are working so closely with our First Responders. Fantastic job!”

The “politically motivated ingrate” he’s referring to is almost certainly Cruz, as it fits the pattern of POTUS’s tweets from Saturday, when he lashed out at the San Juan mayor and the people of Puerto Rico who “want everything to be done for them.” The idea here is clear; America citizens living in Puerto Rico should be on their knees thanking Trump for doing anything at all. Anyone who doesn’t is a whining freeloader.

Of course, Trump’s attacks are mostly just dog whistle/air raid sirens to his base and attempts to soothe his own easily bruised ego. By all serious accounts, Puerto Rico is still in a heap of trouble. Large portions of the island are still without power or access to clean water. Cell phone service is spotty at best and you get the feeling the people who are suffering the most aren’t sitting around watching the news to see what Donald Trump has to say.

One more time, people are dying.
