Trump wants to fire Tillerson for not denying he called him ‘a fucking moron’

Sources speaking to Axios suggest President Trump is going to replace Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo in the Secretary of State role largely because the former Exxon CEO bruised the president’s ego.

The source of Trump’s ire is reportedly two-fold. Trump is angry that Tillerson didn’t explicitly deny calling his boss “a fucking moron” during the hastily cobbled together Wednesday press conference where the Secretary of State tried to convince reporters that he thinks his boss is smart and competent. Also, Trump is pissed off that the Tillerson story overshadowed coverage of his Las Vegas trip, where he was substantially better behaved than when he was visiting Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

From Axios:

After what Trump considered a strong trip to Vegas, he seethed when he got back and saw Tillerson’s gaffe dominating cable-news coverage. Everywhere he flipped, there was Tillerson’s face instead of his.

The relationship is so toxic, sources tell Jonathan Swan and me, that few in the White House think it can be rebuilt. There’s zero trust between the West Wing and the State Department.
NBC, which broke the “moron” story, said the chief of staff “abruptly scrapped plans to travel with … Trump on Wednesday so he could try to contain his boss’s fury.”

NBC also reported that Trump spent two hours “fuming” inside the White House after the “moron” story broke at 6 a.m. We imagine he spent a lot of time yelling at his television like he is said to do when cable news airs coverage of the Russia probe.

As it stands, the relationship between Trump and Tillerson is completely broken, but White House babysitter John Kelly is said to be urging the president not to cause any more high-profile exits for awhile.
