Ivana Trump: ‘I’m basically first Trump wife. I’m first lady.’
The Trump administration is expanding its cast of characters as it prepares for the fall sweeps week, adding oft-referenced but until now never seen ex-wife Ivana Trump. Her introduction to audiences came last week on an episode of “CBS This Morning,” where she revealed that, keeping with the show’s theme of nepotism, she had been offered a role to be the U.S. ambassador to the Czech Republic, which she ultimately turned down to keep her “perfect life.”
“OK, why would I go and say bye-bye to Miami in the winter, bye-bye to Saint-Tropez in the summer and bye-bye to spring and fall in New York?” Ivana posed. Of course, had she taken the position, it would also have prevented the natural tensions with the main cast her presence will produce — like this not-so-subtle dig at current matriarch Melania Trump on “Good Morning America”:
“I [don’t] really want to call him there, because Melania is there,” Ivana said, regarding her ex’s new home at the White House. “And I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that, because I’m basically first Trump wife. OK? I’m first lady.”
Insert audience whoops here. Nevertheless, Ivana made it clear she wouldn’t be written out anytime soon, and that she had in fact has been calling her ex-husband every two weeks, and has a “direct number” to the White House. And while she wouldn’t want to be in Melania’s shoes, she said would without a doubt do a better job filling them.
“Would I straighten up the White House in 14 days? Absolutely,” Ivana said. “Can I give the speech for 45 minutes without [a] teleprompter? Absolutely. Can I read a contract? Can I negotiate? Can I entertain? Absolutely. But I would not really like to be there. I like my freedom.”
Now we’ll just have to wait to see what her catchphrase is.
