Seth MacFarlane joked about Weinstein’s misconduct at 2013 Oscar nominations
In addition to the horrifying New Yorker story detailing several rape accusations, the New York Times dropped a large feature Tuesday where A-listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie detailed sexual harassment they suffered at the hands of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Buried within the meticulously reported piece is a mention of Seth MacFarlane making a joke about the open secret of Weinstein’s sexual misconduct during the 2013 Academy Awards nominations.
“Congratulations,” MacFarlane said after announcing Best Lead Actress nominations, “you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.”
You can hear a room full of reporters laughing.
By this point, several stories attempting to expose Weinstein’s casting couch antics had been killed by higher-ups. One reporter recently detailed a story she was working on in 2004 that she says was gutted after Weinstein visited New York Times HQ to announce his displeasure.
Perhaps the people in the room were laughing because someone was able to subtly out a guy who used his power to force sexual favors from actresses who are now famous and actresses whose careers ended before they began because they refused Weinstein’s advances. Or perhaps they’re just laughing because they’ve resigned themselves that creeps are gonna creep with impunity as long as they have the influence and wealth to insulate themselves from consequences.
Regardless, the joke doesn’t seem so funny now.
