Photographic evidence contradicts Ivanka’s dyed blue hair story

Ivanka Trump constructed a hell of a self-mythology in her contributions to her mother Ivana’s book “Raising Trump,” which paints the 35-year-old, in the early ’90s, as a blue-haired “punk” who wept uncontrollably at the passing of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The idea that Ivanka was accidentally turned into a blonde glamizon via a drugstore box of hair dye after her mom threw a fit after Ivanka’s coated her head in Manic Panic sounds ripe for a teen comedy, and maybe it is just a revisionist chapter in the Ivanka origin story.

“During my punk phase in the nineties, I was really into Nirvana. My wardrobe consisted of ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts,” the now first daughter of the nation wrote. “One day after school, I dyed my hair blue. Mom wasn’t a fan of this decision. She took one look at me and immediately went out to the nearest drugstore to buy a $10 box of Nice’n Easy. That night, she forced me to dye my hair back to blond. The color she picked out was actually three shades lighter than my natural color… and I have never looked back!”

Really? Going blonde when you already have vegetable dye in your hair isn’t something you do over the bathroom sink one night. This calls for a trip to the salon to strip the blue semi-permanent dye out of one’s hair and then toning the hair so that the blonde isn’t brassy or outright orange — much like her father’s apricot-textured flab. Take it from me, a person who made many bad DIY home hair decisions involving natural and unnatural colors in the early ’90s.

“It wasn’t too long after this that Kurt Cobain, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for Nirvana, committed suicide,” Ivanka wrote. “It was a shock and I was distraught. Mom had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, and she sympathized only so much. After twenty-four hours of my crying inconsolably in my room, alone—major melodrama—Mom had to pull me out of there to go down to dinner.”

The top image of this post was taken in September, 1994 — months after Kurt Cobain killed himself. Ivanka was 12 years old and ostensibly either still in her “punk” phase or just coming out of it.  I know looks can be deceiving, but does she really look like she’d be crying over the death of the guy who wrote “Lithium” or “Rape Me”?

Also, let’s revisit the “never looked back!” claim over going blonde because of a happy punk accident. Again, the top image was taken in September, 1994, not long after Cobain killed himself. Ivanka says the hair dye incident took place before Cobain’s death.

Here is the 14-year-old former punk two years later at her dad’s 50th birthday party. Her hair is still brown.

In fact, if you scroll through Getty, her hair was brown for most of the ’90s. She tells a nice story, though.
