Chess grandmaster tired of people comparing Trump’s politics to chess
Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov is tired of people comparing Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s political maneuvering to chess, Politico reports. Kasparov, a Russian grandmaster turned human rights activist, explained that the metaphor, beloved by Pepes and pundits alike, doesn’t hold up because Trump and Putin are both liars who are full of shit.
“When I hear phrases like, ‘Putin plays chess, Obama plays checkers,’ or moreover, ‘Trump plays chess,’ I feel I have my duty to defend the game that I have been playing for decades,” Kasparov said. “It’s a transparent game. It’s 100 percent transparency. You know what I have; I know what you have. So, we don’t know the intentions of the opponent, but we know the resources our opponent can use to do us harm.”
Because neither Trump nor Putin’s administrations care much about transparency, Kasparov said, the metaphor doesn’t work. “Both of them despise playing by the rules, so it’s who will cheat first,” he said.
This isn’t the first time the chess community has pushed back against the political establishment’s fondness for deploying the game as an analogy for Trump’s supposed political savvy. In a recent Vice News Tonight segment, chess experts agreed the comparison doesn’t work because Trump is an idiot who probably sucks at regular chess anyway.
“I don’t think Donald Trump would do well at chess,” said Dr. Leroy Dubeck, a former president of the U.S. Chess Federation who helped design the official rules for tri-dimensional chess. “Trump, in most of the things I’ve seen him do, is reactionary. He appears to make impulsive moves and that can be disastrous in chess.”
“He may think he’s playing chess, but he’s just moving the pieces and saying checkmate,” Tony Britton, founder of the Amateur Tri-Dimensional Chess League, said. “And I’m like, wait a minute, time out, that’s not how the pieces move.”
