The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have a real gift for threading the needle of classic pop cliches with enough personality and authentic sincerity to come through the needle’s eye looking hip rather than looking like a bunch of cheesy goofballs.

Singer Kip Berman is somehow able to load this track with lyrics like “You’re all I ever wanted” and “You’re the one,” intoned in sweet diatonic melody, and still come out sounding fresh, with a hint of pathos, and with enough grit to let you put it on repeat without getting sick of it.

“The One” is the B-side to single “Heart in Your Heartbreak” (in case you haven’t noticed, these guys have a lot of heart) which which began circulating last month and officially releases December 14 on 7″ vinyl.

Their sophomore album, a follow-up to their self-titled debut released last February, is due out in March. Legendary producers Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, U2) and Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain) are working on new record.
