James Cameron to Produce 3D Cirque du Soleil Movie
James Cameron has signed on to make what sounds like the lamest 3D movie since Brendan Fraser’s ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth.’
According to a Deadline exclusive, James Cameron has signed on to a produce a 3D movie about Cirque du Soleil. “The untitled film is a hybrid combining narrative storytelling with Cirque performances that are being captured in 3D from different themed Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas,” Deadline reports.
Earlier this year Cameron made headlines for trashing ‘Pirhana 3D’ for adding 3D to the film post ex facto. “It just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like ‘Friday the 13th 3D.'” To which ‘Piranha”s producer retorted, “Jim, are you kidding or what? First of all, let’s start by you accepting the fact that you were the original director of PIRANHA 2 and you were fired.”
Personally, my response is, Jim, are you kidding? ‘Piranha 3D’ was the most enjoyable, fun movie of the summer. Which will no doubt not be the case for the “hybrid combining narrative storytelling with Cirque performances” we’re due for at some point next year.
James Cameron is undisputedly a talented filmmaker—one of the real magicians of the medium. But the man has no sense of humor. He is profoundly uncool. Cameron’s movies, while enchanted and engaging, are not particularly funny nor fun—at least for adults.
Will we all go see ‘Avatar 2′ next Christmas? Sure. But we all know what to expect from it—some extremely pretty forests and some hyper-convincing CGI. But what I’m really looking forward to in 2011? ‘Piranha 3DD.’
