J Mascis To Release a Solo Acoustic Album
“Several Shades of Why” will feature ten acoustic songs from Mascis and several of his indie-famous friends.
J Mascis, the alt-rock legend of Dinosaur Jr. fame, has recorded an acoustic album with the help of Kurt Vile, Kevin Drew, and members of Band of Horses, among others. “Several Shades of Why” is Mascis’s first solo studio effort and will feature ten soft and intricate compositions, created by Mascis and a revolving cast of collaborators, that stray from Dinosaur Jr.’s highly distorted drone rock.
“Not Enough,” the first track to see the light of day from the album, is a simple yet compelling tune crafted out of the bare arrangement of acoustic guitar, tambourine, and vocals. Unsurprisingly, Mascis’s whiny, low-key drawl – half-buried under a sea of guitar distortion for the last twenty-odd years – fits perfectly over the folksy composition. His mumbling voice is eventually joined by a handful of others for the chorus, as layers of elaborate guitar arpeggios carry the song to its end.
“Several Shades of Why” is due out March 15 via Sub Pop. Listen to “Not Enough” below and download it by giving the boys over at Sub Pop your e-mail.
