Santacon 2010: NYC Goes Rogue

Every year thousands of Santas gather to drink and be merry, and spread mildly anarchist cheer.

This year, with all the controversy around WikiLeaks the and the Operation Payback cyber attacks, anarchy is a particularly relevant theme. So it seems like a strange coincidence that today, after yesterday’s Santacon 2010 NYC gathering, Santacon’s website is suddenly down:

Santacon 2010: NYC Goes Rogue

It’s a safe bet that the State Department didn’t lean on ‘HostPC.com’ to deny service to Santacon the way they pressured Amazon, Paypal, Visa and Mastercard to cut off acccess to WikiLeaks.

It also seems highly unlikely that Operation Payback downed the site—their Twitter feed hasn’t boasted a” SANTACON DOWN!” message, and plus, cyber-anarchists and a multitude of anonymous Santas sticking it to the man by defying public drunkenness laws seem like two groups of kindred souls, not adversaries.

So maybe it’s just a good year for sticking it to the man, and a bad year for cyber security.
