Fiona Apple Records New Song for Chickens in Love!

Huh? What’s Chickens in Love, you ask? Imagine combining a really awesome nonprofit tutoring, writing and publishing organization (826 National), a music composition workshop for kids taught by The Submarines, and a whole lot of great artists coming together for a benefit album for said nonprofit, and you have Chickens in Love. The album, due out April 20th, will donate its proceeds to 826LA in particular and features new songs not only by Apple but fellow LA artists She & Him, Tim & Eric, Crystal Antlers, Dum Dum Girls, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and more. The catch — all the songs were written as part of the workshop by children ages 7 to 13.

As part of the workshop, students formed their own bands (my favorite names included Hot Fudge, The Gummy Bears and Jennifer Lopez) and composed the songs that will be covered for the album. Videos of the bands performing with the students can be found here, a site that also serves as a pledge-a-thon (with all profits going to 826LA). Whichever video earns the most money will win the coveted 826LA Gold Record, as well as an ice cream party for all participants. There will also be a mini music festival to support the album and fundraising effort, March 1st at LA’s Echoplex. The event will feature the Submarines, Summer Darling, The Happy Hollows, The Growlers and surprise guests and is obviously an all ages show.

It will be the first new track released by Apple in five years, who is not only contributing to the compilation, but sits on the Advisory Board of 826LA (along with Judd Apatow, Spike Jonze, Sarah Vowell and a host of other big names doing something awesome with their time and money).
