Ron Paul Defends Occupy Wall Street and Middle Class at Republican Debate

In the Las Vegas debate last night, Rep. Ron Paul defended Occupy Wall Street protesters against Herman Cain‘s invectives, stating, “Mr. Cain has blamed the victims.” Thank you, Dr. Paul.

Rep. Ron Paul is definitely the only Republican candidate who has displayed a degree of sympathy for the Occupy Wall Street protesters, and last night he proved it on a national stage by addressing resident Republican crazy man (one of many), Herman Cain.

Cain has suggested that OWS is anti-American and that they have only themselves to blame for their troubles—not Wall Street nor the government whom they have been petitioning for a grievance.

Cain stated in the debate, “They’re directing their anger at the wrong place. Wall Street didn’t put in failed economic policies… Wall Street isn’t going around the country trying to sell another $450 billion. They should be standing in front of the White House.”

Well, Sir, they are, in fact, standing as close to the White House as they can and everywhere else across the country.

Paul defended the protesters by stating, “Mr. Cain has blamed the victims. There are a lot of people who are victims of this business cycle.”

Paul, of course, traces a lot of the economic problems back to the Federal Reserve, the fractional banking apparatus of which Herman Cain was a member (of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank), and which allowed a number of banks and investors to make risky investments with criminal financial instruments (the credit-default swap), knowing full well that the Federal Reserve and the federal government would have no choice but to bail them out if toxic mortgage securities began to implode.

“[The Federal Reserve] creates the financial bubbles,” said Paul. “Who got stuck? The middle class got stuck. They lost their jobs and they lost their houses.”

And Paul said what so many politicians are unwilling to say, “We have to blame the business cycle and the economic polices that led to this disaster.”

Thank you, Dr. Paul, for defending the honorable protesters and middle class against Mr. Cain’s ignorant blustering on national television.

OWS needs to become a total movement and Rep. Paul’s acknowledgement is a great step toward this coalescence.

Let’s protect the Bill of Rights and the US Constitution from the perpetual abuse DC has been dishing out for years and years.

Or one of the corporate-sponsored tools like Romney/Perry/Cain and such. Ron Paul is the only honest and consistent candidate in the whole race (and in a looong while) and he’s the only one with anything even close to a solution. He is the candidate for the people and he wants to do away with as much government as possible precisely because the government is the main reason for the problems we are in. They killed free market a long time ago and they are doing anything they can to ensure profits of banks, big pharma and insurance corporations at cost to everyone else. Obama’s healthcare plan ? Force everyone who doesn’t have insurance to buy one ! lol…

    Intelligent Article.

When people think about cutting they often think about what the money was intended for in theory, so … cutting national defense reduces our defense/security.  Or allowing young people to opt out of Social Security will reduce their security.  Here’s one example of how this isn’t true.

A person earning $50,000 per year and paying $1000/month on rent could own a $200,000 outright in 15y without spending an extra dime.  SS tax is 10.4%(4.2+6.2) or $5,200/y for this person.  After just 2 years this low income person could afford a down payment and spend their rent on paying off debt instead.  After 15y their SS would have paid 78,000 and rent the interest and rest of principal.  How’s that for security.  A house with zero debt.  Housing bubble, interest rates rise, no problem.  You’re free and clear.  And that’s only after 15y.  The alternative for many is to keep paying rent their whole Lives and then get SS when their old, not even enough to cover that rent.

Let’s be humane and stop sucking the poor dry.  Let’s allow them to keep the financial security they’ve earned and the dignity that comes with taking care of yourself and family.

I agree with you that people should take care of their own future. However, you will find many people eventually will lose this house once they retire due to outrageous property taxes. It is no wonder between inflation and property taxes that so many need assistance. For this plan to work, which I hope it is tried at least, you must get rid of property taxes, at least for the elderly. I have no problem with a one time sales tax on the purchase but there is no real land ownership in this country with yearly extorsion..I mean taxes collected. In the example you provide, this person could still be paying about $400 a month in property taxes depending on where they live, and this skews your numbers a bit. Along with energy costs, even if you own your house you can’t afford to live on SS. Most have to sell their homes just to have that money to survive on in the short term.

Credit default swaps are not “criminal financial instruments.”  They are a derivative security that has been in use for over 100 years.  Like anything, when enough leverage is applied whether its CDS or NASDAQ stocks, massive volatility can result.  The Federal Reserve, the Government and Wall Street colluded to create a massive ponzi scheme fueled entirely by cheap credit and over-leverage.   Credit Default Swaps, themselves, had nothing specifically to do with this.  It’s the same bubble machine it was in 1929.  This game will be played out over and over again.  Next time some other esoteric financial instrument will be at the center but the result will be the same.  Banksters and politicians get more money and power and we get a heavier debt yolk, both public and private.

I’m right across the street from Zuccotti Park so I see it everyday.  I really and truly believe there is no common theme to the people out there, from a political spectrum point of view.  I think of it as a mosaic of the collective frustration of the people.  Its unfortunate that more folks don’t understand our financial system.  The Fed and the Gov’t are the mechanism that allows Wall Street to stay publicly subsidized and privately profitable.  If there was no Fed, JPMorgan wouldn’t be too big to fail, it would be too big to save and the whole house of cards would collapse.   If we had simply publicly executed Dick Fuld for his personal role in this, the sheep would think that the culprits had been brought to justice and the machine would just keep on going.

If there are left wingers in the mix out there, they were probably put there by the TBTF’s.  The banking cabal would love to see this country go completely leftwing.  They wouldn’t have to work so hard to hide their theft of the people’s wealth.

Way to stick your neck out, Dr. Paul. No person should be called to account. No corporation did anything wrong. All the blame goes to a “business cycle” and “policies”.Once we declare the business cycle a citizen and throw it in jail, justice will have been served?Same old same old school political drivel/distraction to facilitate letting the guilty rich run free while the poor are punished for everyone’s sins.If this looks to anyone like political courage, you have been living in right wing darkness for so long that you’ve mistaken the nearest pile of phosphorescent guano for the light at the end of the tunnel, in my opinion.

Actually, if you understand what underlies Ron Paul’s statement, you’ll know that he believes that the Federal Reserve causes the business cycle.  He is very clear on this.  Because every single one of his positions, statements, and thoughts ties directly to an underlying belief or philosophy, it sometimes takes an extra layer of thought.  But once you get him, you’ll be able to predict EXACTLY where he would stand on any issue that may arise. He’s that consistent and that reliable.  In terms of calling someone into account, he wrote a book called “End the Fed.”

“No person should be called to account.”

It’s hard to communicate a complex opinion in a debate format where you’re allowed 60 seconds to answer a question. It’s probably also harder to understand that opinion when all you learn about it comes from a couple of lines quoted on an article.

But if you watched the debate, you might have heard Ron Paul also say we have to deal with the fraud involved in the system. And he asked “how many people have gone to jail?” in regards to the 2008 meltdown and crash, pointing out that the government has failed to take the crash serious in any way [except as an excuse for a power grab].

Yes, there should be some called to account, and Paul seems to be all for that. Did you expect this lone legislator (Paul) to conduct an investigation on his own, maybe personally hire a private investigator to get to the bottom of this? Without a majority in Washington being for it, that’s all he could do. Because, in the absence of having an investigation, I sure hope he isn’t pointing fingers at particular people and accusing them of fraud. But it sounds like you would like to see that.

You sound like the kind of person who blames Paul, says he wouldn’t make a good president, because you think he’s all talk and no walk since he hasn’t gotten anything good through Congress, never mind the fact that it’s a democratic process and there’s often around 80% of the other delegates (his equals) who oppose his proposals.

I am surprised at a positive article from you, after http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/151502/how-god-makes-ron-paul-a-big-hypocrite/ you called Paul a hypocrite for defending life.  Paul only stated that life should be defended, including the unborn in his personal opinion, but he admits that his personal opinion would be left out of the matter. Instead, Paul argues that the decision to define when life begins (whether conception, birth, or somewhere in between) should be left up to the states. A reasonable policy from our next president, wouldn’t you agree? He feels the same way about numerous other policies, such as marijuana legalization or gay marriage. so lets get the federal government out of it, and start moving powers back to the states.

First off let me say that I agree with Ron Paul. But this article is unfair to Herman Cain. He IS blaming the government for the problems, not the protesters.

    “Cain has suggested that OWS
is anti-American and that they have only themselves to blame for their
troubles—not Wall Street nor the government whom they have been
    petitioning for a grievance.

Cain stated in the debate, “They’re directing their anger at the
wrong place. Wall Street didn’t put in failed economic policies… Wall
Street isn’t going around the country trying to sell another $450
billion. They should be standing in front of the White House.”

This article makes a statement that Cain doesn’t blame wall street, or the government, then the very quote they use, Cain blames the government… Poorly done.

Anyway, the “honorable” protesters, should go protest those that pass the laws, instead of those that do what they can to make a buck – yes, it’s greed, and a lot of the protesters would do the same thing if their job were to make money.

    Stop being the victim!

“Don’t blame Wall Street,” Cain said. “Don’t blame the big banks. If you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself.” -Herman Cain Oct 5, 2011

Cain IS blaming the protesters, NOT Wall Street and the Bankers.

Ron is right, it’s the Fed that creates the finacial bubbles. He’s been saying the same thing for decades and only now are people are beginning to listen to him. Paul’s dream of ending the Fed would bring sound money back to our economy. It would also rain on the parade of big banks, the war industry, and the cronies in Washington who are counting on us to all be good little sheeple and put in the next pretty boy the corporate-controlled media has selected so they can get on with business as usual.

Ron Paul in 2012 is a no-brainer, but to make that possible we must all contribute to get his name out. He rarely gets publicity from the mainstream media and he sure as hell doesn’t bow down to the special interests, so he’s not getting fat checks like the rest. This is a grassroots effort. ronpaul2012.com

Ron Paul needs to ask Herman Cain?  “How are the banks not at fault when it was the banks that lost/stole trillions of retirement fund money that belonged to middle class and retired Americans?  Was that the fault of the Obama Administration?  Why did the Bush and Obama Administration give money to the mis-managers? Or loans at less that 1%?  If loans were going to be made available to business owners why not make the loans available to all businesses with annual revenues over $250K for the past five years? Since the banks did make the mistakes and received the favoritism, shouldn’t these people have an opinion about what has been done to them?

SO why aren’t sites like this one asking the OWS and other Democrats to register Republican for the presidential primaries?  If the insistence of the OWS is that every bailed out bankster should get theirs, the only shot they have of actually getting that on the agenda is having Paul win at least the primary.

The “Occupy Wall Street” so-called “movement” (i.e., bowel movement) is controlled by scumbag sleazy anti-Jewish gutter-vermin, so, of course, Ron Paul, is going to back them up. He is ONE of THEM.  That is obvious to anyone with a brain.  That is why the Nazi Party backs BOTH the “Occupy Wall Street” (bowel)”movement” as well as Ron Paul.  The Leftists, who are simply the NEW Nazis, also back the anti-Jewish subcretin gutter-vermin.  However, I can understand why Paul and his son went into politics. Nobody with a brain would trust their health to those submoronic scuzbuckets.

Doesn’t matter what party or movement you are with, if you have a brain you know Ron Paul is the only candidate capable of restoring America. Think like you do VT and you’ll really be stuck with someone more like a Nazi. You are an idiot if you think Dr Paul is anti Jewish. Israel will also be stronger & allowed to do as they wish under a Ron Paul presidency.

This is a smart move for Paul, to position himself as the defender of the Poor and Middle Class who must pay for the bailouts and the wars overseas with their sons and daughters and their hard earned dollars.

It’s the middle class that’s been hurt most by the policies of the Federal Reserve and the bailouts to banking hucksters.

The middle class got SCREWED and Paul is the only one intelligent enough and courageous enough to stick up for us!

Keep at it, Dr. Paul! Keep defending liberty, the Constitution, and the American Taxpayer and you will become President of these United States!

I was there in 2007 for the beginning of the tea party and I camped out last night at OWS. Both were born out of opposition to the bailouts. Let’s keep that message spreading and expose/prosecute the Federal Reserve.

“Rep. Ron Paul is definitely the only Republican candidate who has displayed a degree of sympathy for the Occupy Wall Street protesters,”

Sorry, this is just inaccurate. Gary Johnson is running for the GOP nomination and has actively campaigned on a OWS platform.

I’m glad you brought this up.  Gary Johnson, Denis Kucinich and Ron Paul are all libertarian or libertarian leaning.  People that are pissed off right now should rightfully be looking at libertarian candidates.  Big government corporatism is what is at the heart of all of these problems.  I’m a huge Ron Paul fan but I think it would be great if the Libertarian Party (www.lp.org) itself got pushed to the forefront as well.  We should have a viable third party.  If Ron Paul doesn’t get the GOP nomination, I hope he runs (again) as a Libertarian.

P.S.  When Gary Johnson was asked who is running mate would be, his answer was Ron Paul.

I don’t know if I’d call Dennis K. libertarian.  He’s in favor of too many social programs for that label.  He and Ron Paul are in close agreement on some issues, though, especially our militarism.

Today I saw a group of OWS protesters, and half were holding Ron Paul signs. I understand that they both criticize the same things, but I am not so sure that their solutions are very similar… From what I understand, OWS is a highly liberal movement, especially on fiscal issues, and Ron Paul is not. There is a very interesting dynamic going on here that I don’t really understand…

I feel this movement crosses normal economic and political boundries. I am sympathetic to elements of the tea party message and I also can sympathize with some of what the Wall St protestors are complaining about.
Here are 3 issues that are bugging me.
1.I’m a union member who works for Verizon.Verizon is a healthy, profitable company. They make billions in profit every quarter. They paid no federal income taxes the past 2 years and somehow even got a tax refund. They also took 1.5 billion $ in bailout money from you and me even though the CEO stated that they did not need any bailout money. So, how do they repay this country and their workers ? By trying to take away my pension, my healthcare plan and most importantly by moving as many American jobs as they can overseas!  How does this help America’s economic recovery ? Who are the politicians that allow this?  Oh ,and the CEO makes the same amount of money as 300 average employees but I’m not supposed to mention this little fact because if I do then I’m engaging in class warfare. This corporation has no allegiance to this country, only to the stock price. The media won’t say anything for fear of losing ad revenue. There has got to be a middle ground between corporate profits and maintaining a viable middle class in this country. 2. This financial disaster which started in late 2008 and is still going on —- who has done the perp walk for this?  NOBODY! NOBODY! As a matter of fact, not only has nobody done the perp walk but these foxes guarding the henhouse  got bailed out with our money and even preserved their big money bonuses in the process.Who should do the perp walk ? People who rated absolute garbage debt as AAA,profiting while doing so. Corporate execs who stand up at a meeting and tell the public their company is healthy when they know that it is a house of cards.I lost alot of money in my 401k because of these irresponible clowns. The fact that nobody has gone to jail for this fiasco just makes your average working person feel that the game is rigged.
    3. I’ve got kids whose future I’m very concerned about. Can you imagine how it must feel to come out of college with 100k- 200k of loan debt and the job prospects are almost none ? These kids have been sold down the river before they even get started.
The politicians on both sides of the aisle and the corporate exec who’s attitude is “let em eat cake” need to know that there is a very large segment of the population that has had it with all of them and is just about reaching a boiling point.
