Spiritualized’s first new record in four years will be out in March.
Spiritualized’s sound has changed a bit over the years, from the spaced-out ’90s epic “Pure Phase” to 2008′s more earth-bound, but no less beautiful “Songs in A&E.” As they’ve evolved, one thing that has remained constant is Jason Pierce’s deep passion, earnestness, and ability to translate pathos into music. “When you make a record, it has to be the single most important thing in your world,” he said recently—which is probably why his records have that kind of overwhelming quality only a few bands like Sigur Rós achieve.
So perhaps it’s fitting that Spiritualized recorded their 2012 album “Sweet Heart Sweet Light” partly in Sigur Rós’ hometown of Reykjavik, Iceland. It was also recorded in Wales, LA, and in Pierce’s own home. The record will be due out in the US in March.
As for the sound of this record, he says in a press release, “It’s got everything from Brötzmann and Berry right through to Dennis and Brian Wilson. I’m obsessed with music and the way you put it together and I don’t believe there are any rules.”
There we have it—it could sound like anything. And while you might say you need look no further than Lou Reed and Metallica’s “Lulu” to prove that there should be some rules, Spiritualized is batting 1000 so far and we fully expect “Sweet Heart Sweet Light” to keep up the trend.
