The ultimate ‘Portlandia’ musician cameo list

“Portlandia” is IFC’s runaway hit—the self-referential send up of the Urban Outfitters culture is an inside joke that everyone seems to be in on. Folk musician and critical darling Joanna Newsom was a recent guest star, but she wasn’t the first cameo from a musician on the show.

St Vincent

The New York City based songstress performed “Laughing With A Mouthful Of Blood” at the show’s feminist bookstore Women and Women First.

Isaac Brock

The Modest Mouse frontman made a recent cameo on the show in a classroom setting. Sadly, he did not bust out “Dramamine” in front of schoolchildren. That would’ve blown their minds. Too soon, Isaac, too soon.

Miranda July

While she might be totally undefinable, the performance artist/director/actor/artist/lady/person/place/thing released three albums in the ’90s.

Carrie Brownstein

See, Carrie is part of the regular cast. So this entry is cheating (we know, we know). She was also in the seminal all-female rock band Sleater Kinney, who totally kicked ass back in the day. Here they are with “You’re No Rock and Roll Fun.”

The Decemberists

Colin Meloy and Jenny Conlee appeared on an episode that also featured auteur Gus Van Sant. While they may look like trigonometry teachers at a community college, they’re also giant rock stars in the indie community. Here’s their video for “O Valencia!”, which is sadly not about valencia orange juice.

Aimee Mann

While she might be the award winning singer-songwriter who wrote the torch song for the early 2000s Starbucks generation (the fantastic “Save Me”), on “Portlandia” she is just a housemaid.

Joanna Newsom

Way back when I used to go and see my friend Noah’s band in San Francisco, the keyboard player was a young art student named Joanna. Now she’s this massive harp star. Such is life.

Eddie Vedder

Pearl Jam frontman and noted singer/songwriter in his own right Eddie Vedder parodied many Gen-X’ers by playing someone with a terrible tattoo.

Corin Tucker from Sleater Kinney was also in the band Echo Echo on the show. Since you posted a Sleater Kinney video, that seems important.

Sorry, in my excitement about Corin, I forgot that James Mercer from The Shins was also an Echo Echo member on that epiode.
