The Shins‘ James Mercer has done a little acting before, having appeared on “Portlandia,” and independent films like “Some Days Are Better Than Others,” but his commercial for Clapping Butter may be his best work on screen so far.
In a Funny or Die skit that doubles as a tie-in for The Shins’ upcoming new album “Port of Morrow,” Mercer and the gang can be seen laying down takes for a new song. A lot of bizarre instrumentation is used, including wiley saxophone, plungered trumpet, and some keytar. Mercer can be seen trying to put in a clap track but can’t quite get the right sound. Luckily, Clapping Butter is introduced and the song is saved. I can only hope, the sessions for “Port of Morrow” had at least a few rounds of group high fives as seen in this video.
