Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky went from obscurity to bankable name in a very short amount of time and is now the toast of the hipsteratti – appearing on a Dazed & Confused magazine cover, a Pitchfork’s Best New Music review, and a headlining gig for Vice’s SXSW showcase.
Sadly, it was at the Vice gig where shit got out of hand. After a rowdy crowdmember stole a bandana from a member of A$AP’s entourage and dove back into the crowd, A$AP stopped the show and (somewhat politely, all things considered) asked for the bandana back. Some members of the crowd decided to throw things at the rap crew. Not a brilliant idea. Things escalated to the point where the entire crew jumped into the crowd and started fighting with them. Not cool.
If you’re going to play a show to a bunch of (mostly white) hipsters who are more used to hour-long rendidtions of “My Sharona” than they are, say, a hip hop show, you have to understand the dynamics of a rock/indie audience. They aren’t going to take kindly to stopping the show over a missing bandana, of all things. A bandana is what, $3? That’s not worth pausing an otherwise awesome show over.
Here’s the video of the incident.
