It’s been three long years since The xx released their self-titled debut and exploded into the stratosphere of indie-rock fame. It’s almost impossible to recall any band who garnered as much mainstream adoration on their debut while maintaining their cool along the way. All of which makes the pressure for a stellar follow-up seem daunting. Add to that the fact that the band members are all still incredibly young—most were under 21 on their last world tour—and meeting expectations for their next release seems like a near-impossibility.

This probably makes it a good thing that the band is taking its sweet time to complete a follow-up. They released a seriously minimal demo last December, but otherwise we haven’t heard peep from them in a while, other than Jamie xx‘s various projects.
