Againt Me! frontman Tom Gabel has revealed in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine – due on newsstands this Friday – that he is transgender and is going to become a woman via surgical procedures. Tom plans to stay married to designer Heather Gabel (born Heather Hannoura), and is a father of one. Eventually, Gabel hopes to change his name to Laura Jane Grace.
To some fans this may not be a surprise as Tom alluded (sorta) to being transgender in the lyrics to the song “The Ocean.”
“And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman; my mother once told me she would have named me Laura, I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her.”
There is no word as to whether this affects Against Me! in any way. Assuredly, we can expect a very interesting next album if and when they do record.

as a trans person, it makes me SO HAPPY that people in the "public eye" are proudly proclaiming who they are instead of hiding in the shadows just save face for their career (or whatever reason.) I hope Laura Jane's "coming out" will empower other trans people who may have felt like they needed to hide who they really are, to seek help and support and become who they truly are.
