Today is ‘Hug an Atheist Day’

Today is the 4th anniversary of “Hug an Atheist Day.” The day started June 1 at midnight and ends June 2 at midnight, a time during which anyone can enjoy “an atheist’s warm embrace.”

The day of atheist hugging was started as a Facebook group, and instructs invitees to:

1. Find an atheist, agnostic, ignostic, nontheist, antitheist, antireligionist, apatheist, secular humanist, skeptic, misotheist, dystheist, structuralist, freethinker, naturalistic pantheist, absurdist, deist, therevada buddhist, mahayana, zen buddhist, nihiilst, marxist, pastafarian, spagnostic, gropaga, existentialist, or anyone else who doubts the existence of a god.
2. Run up to that nonbeliever, and give him/her a gigantic hug!

This might be a hard thing for the hardcore true believer to do, but this type could certainly use some practice in the area of kindness and tolerance.

One hilarious Facebook commenter read “When is it time for Handjob an Atheist Day?”

Indeed.

Even if this event is silly, I'm hoping most hugs won't have that reasoning behind. I wouldn't take that hug D:

"Yes we hug you cause you're going to Hell"…which doesn't even exist! anyway the hug does and that's what Jesus would've done… right?

Sorry guys it was a family sarcasm, most of my family are atheist. Thought this was only posting to my FB. It wasn't meant to offend anyone.

Just because some Atheist is so annoying or ugly that they can't get anybody to touch them doesn't mean they need to drag a bunch of other legitimate beliefs into some goofy mandatory-hug day. I especially resent humanism and agnosticism being here. Additionally, not all of the listed beliefs doubt the belief of "a God." For example, many Buddhists consider the Buddha to be a god (though that is a perversion of Siddhartha's teachings), but I think what you are really getting at is that you want to exclude Abrahamic faiths from something.

These kinds of goofy "National X a Y" days are just plain depressing. Especially if the 'creator' of the day is a legal adult. I can only pray that s/he is a minor and doesn't know better.

implying that any belief is legitimate was the true joke.

Pass. Seems like a easy way for religionists to sink a knife into our backs.
