Hot Chip covers Prince’s ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’ for BBC

I have a tradition of listening to the 1987 Prince classic double album “Sign O’ the Times” on the first of June each year. For one, there’s never a bad day for listening to Prince, not to mention in the typically beautiful weather the late spring has to offer, but also because of the line on the album’s title track, “In September my cousin tried reefer for the very first time, now he’s doing horse…it’s June.”

There are many great songs off that record, one of which is the gender bending single “If I Was Your Girlfriend.” Hot Chip showed their love for that song yesterday when they appeared on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show for an interview and performance. On the show’s “wild card” segment, the band plays their new song “Look at What We Are” from the forthcoming “In Our Heads,” which then morphs into the Prince favorite with great ease.

Here’s a link to the show. The performance is around the 1:19:50 mark. Also check out a performance of “If I Was Your Girlfriend” by the Purple One below.
