Lana Del Rey has taken a little flack for lyrics that tend to run on the sophomoric side of things, so I guess it’s not surprising that she draws an “Oh please,” from a nearby audience member with chorus lyrics that have her sounding like a literal sophomore just discovering Walt Whitman: “I sing the body electric.” She also drops the line “Whitman is my daddy.”
But for the most part the crowd seemed to go nuts for Del Rey at her show this weekend at LA’s El Rey Theater, her first in six months. The new track is slow and plodding, with strings, which is usually where Del Rey is at her best. If you squint with your ears, the chorus kind of sounds like Nirvana doing “Something In The Way” on MTV Unplugged.
