The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and allies are edging closer to launching the “Fortnight for Freedom” campaign, which would attack contraceptive rights; specifically, the Obama administration’s decision to require insurance companies to treat contraception as a basic healthcare right.
According to the ACLU’s Executive Director Anthony Romero, “ nearly 50 Catholic-affiliated institutions have filed lawsuits challenging the rule.” The campaign is aimed at both Obama’s reelection campaign, as well as Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebellius.
This is yet another example of a religious institution (almost always Christian) attempting to impose its religious belief on an entire country. The Catholic Church is, of course, free to advise its followers not to use insured contraception healthcare—that is their First Amendment right. However, the First Amendment does not permit them to demand that of everyone outside the Catholic Church.
To tell Secretary Sebellius that you support the “decision to provide access to affordable contraception for all women,” head over to ACLU’s website to send an email letter to the Secretary.
