Cat Power streams new track ‘Ruin,’ announces new record

Cat Power‘s last record, 2008′s “Jukebox,” was basically a covers record. Which is no sneeze for Chan Marshall—her version of The Velvet Underground’s “I Found a Reason” on her 2000 record of covers was one of the best tracks to come out that decade. But it does mean that the last record of original material she released was six years ago, with 2006′s well-received “The Greatest.”

Today she announces “Sun,” a comeback record of sorts, and streams the lead single “Ruin.” The new track has almost a disco beat, something we haven’t heard from Marshall before, and sounds like a bit of a departure from her signature fragile interpretation of blues-based rhythms.

According to Pitchfork the album’s completion and her new short haircut both coincided with her breakup from longtime boyfriend Giovanni Ribisi. “It’s all good,” though, she says. “I love the person very much. I actually love this record very much, too.”

Check out “Ruin” below. “Sun” releases September 4.
