Summer’s finally here! You know that because you’re still peeling yourself off the pavement from yesterday’s scorcher which is still going strong today. Fear not though! We’ve compiled a thorough playlist to remind you again why you seem to like summer so much even when it repeatedly kicks you in the ass. Much like our ’90s springtime mix we made last March, we’re hitting you with a king-sized Smörgåsbord of tuneage to soak up those rays, ride them waves, and spark up the grill. Be sure also to check our two summer mixtapes from last year.
Intro — We Love Radio 108FM from “Do the Right Thing”
And that’s the truth, Ruth.
Superchunk — “This Summer”
Superchunk recently returned with this glammy, power-pop single and thank God for that!
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince — “Summertime”
“The temperature’s about 88, hop in the water plug just for old time’s sake.”
Ben Folds Five — “Where’s Summer B.?”
Hey, these guys are back together you know?
Best Coast — “The Only Place”
It’s kind of hard to imagine Best Coast‘s music existing in any other season. Good thing they’re from California.
Jane’s Addiction — “Ocean Size”
Ditto for Jane’s Addiction.
Eleanor Friedberger — “My Mistakes”
“Last Summer,” the debut solo album from The Fiery Furnaces’ frontwoman Eleanor Friedberger is an excellent, reflective trip which is expertly initiated by this sunny opening track. It’s especially effective if you live in Brooklyn as several spots in the New York borough are name checked throughout the record.
The Police — “Regatta de Blanc”
The Police’s second album is filled with Caribbean vibes and white-boy reggae but the instrumental title track truly hits the nail on the head in terms of capturing that open sea air feeling.
that dog. — “One Summer Night”
That Dog have also reunited this year but if you didn’t catch them at Music Hall of Williamsburg last month then you may be out of luck.
The Magnetic Fields — “Summer Lies”
An oldie from The Magnetic Fields‘ second album, “The Wayward Bus.” Try not to get your heart broken this summer.
Theodore Shapiro and Craig Wedren — “Higher and Higher”
For those looking for the “what is it?..a new way?”
Girls — “Lust For Life”
The first Girls album is a perfect for the joys the warmer weather can bing which is best exemplified with this compulsively smile-inducing video (the dude singing into the flower is the best part).
Polaris — “Summerbaby”
Little Pete’s favorite song and an underrated summer anthem.
We Are Serenades — “Oceans”
We posted this video by the Swedish duo Serenades way back in the fall and it made us miss summer a lot. Glad to finally be listening to it in appropriate weather. Check out our interview with them from the winter.
Pearl Jam — “Oceans”
Eddie Vedder is a big time surf enthusiasts if this video is any clue-in.
Led Zeppelin — “Dancing Days”
Soaking through your jeans at night with sweat = this song.
Beach House — “On the Sea”
There are many gorgeous and vivid moments of fleeting beauty on “Bloom,” Beach House‘s stellar new record. “On the Sea” in particular, which has a galloping piano progression that is gradually joined by soaring guitar, a swirling keyboard hook and Victoria Legrand’s endless voice that evokes the image of a horse walking on the shoreline into the sunset.
Aquabats — “Pool Party”
Right down to its inexplicable Rush tribute in its break, “Pool Party” by the Aquabats remains the most amazing song to ever address the subject of high school summertime glory.
Queens of the Stone Age — “Feel Good Hit of the Summer”
And if all that sun, heat, barbecues and pool parties bore you, there’s still a few other ways to enjoy the summer…
