The Tibetan Mastiff is all the rage among wealthy people in China, with purebreds going for as high as 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) in recent years. But what do we really know about the most expensive dog in the world?
For one, it’s an ancient breed that originated in Central China. Legend has it Marco Polo spotted them on his travels and, probably still miffed about not finding a unicorn, exaggerated, describing them as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion.” This is how I usually describe myself, and believe me it’s a lot to live up to.
It’s also worth noting that the Tibetan Mastiff is not a true mastiff, which is “a type of large dog often used as guard dogs.” This is not a dig to Tibet, but the “Tibetan Terrier” is not a terrier either, nor is the “Tibetan Spaniel” a spaniel.
Here are some of the Tibetan Mastiff’s cooler qualities:
1. They have nice teeth.

2. Their hair is pretty metal…

3. …but they clean up nice with a blow-out.

4. They’re ferocious at times…

5. …yet docile when they need to be.

6. Their puppies look good enough to eat.

7. They’re the closest thing to a lion you can legally own in all 50 states.

8. They’re the closest thing to a bear you can legally own in all 50 states.

9. They’re the closest thing to Chewbacca that exists in reality.

10. They’re larger than life.

hopefully no one here in the southern US tries to get one. with all that fur and massive body the heat could very well be too much for them in the summer. these guys are designed for cooler temps for sure.

Number 10 is a Caucasian Ovcharka by the way, not a TM. And they're a lot cheaper outside of China's nouveau riche fad for breeding huge TM crossbreeds like some of the dogs pictured. And yes, they are very cool companions for the right person – just make sure that your IQ is higher than the dog's as these are incredibly intelligent, quick, agile and independent beasties who will humour you rather than obey you and consider being with you being in the same county. And did I mention destructive? Mine is 8 now and not as bad as he was up to the age of about 3, but he's still nicknamed JCB. People may say why the hell would you want a dog that will wreck you house, dig craters in your garden, jump your 6 foot fence from a standing start and you keep on a flexilead on walks off your property? But if you ever share your life with a TM, you'll understand.
