Utah school seizes and throws out school lunches of indebted students

Jan 30, 2014

The war on poor children eating lunch continues! An elementary school in Salt Lake City dealt with the ginormous problem of parents being behind in their school lunch payments by sending in their “child-nutrition manager” to come in one day during lunch and seize the lunches of indebted children and throw them out.

Because apparently, it is much better to waste food than to allow poor children to eat it. Really. Good job there.

There has been a huge uproar in the community over the fact that the school dealt with this problem by humiliating the students, and the school has since “sorry you were offended”-apologized and promised that it won’t happen again.

Frankly, I hope the parents of those children sue  the school district–for the exact amount it will cost for their children to eat lunch every day for the rest of their schooling years.

I don’t think we need to have another talk about how humiliating little kids because their parents don’t have the money to pay for their lunches–possibly because food stamps were just cut–is wrong and disgusting. This is something everyone should understand. Sadly, it isn’t.

Sadly, there are people out there who are somehow deeply offended by the idea of poor children eating lunch. Those people need to get it together. If the Black Panthers got it together in the ’60s and ’70s to provide breakfast for poor children, then I think our government should be able to figure out how to feed them lunch without being petty jerks about it. Or do we need to ask the Black Panthers to be in charge of this? Because, not gonna lie, I would kind of love to see that.
