President Obama’s approval ratings have been on a steady decline, sure, but at least there’s one group who continually show him love: Muslims. Conservatives are about to have a field day.
According to a new Gallup poll, 78% of Muslim Americans think the president’s doing a great job. In fact, Muslims have consistently been the Commander-in-Chief’s biggest supporters—an average of 83% from three surveys taken over the past 18 months, as opposed to the general American average of about 53%.
These statistics put Muslims just ahead of other non-Christians, 64%, and those damned atheists and agnostics, 63%. Mormons, meanwhile, bring up the rear: only 24% of them think Obama’s doing right in the White House, and have traditionally been the least supportive of the president’s job performance.
The right wing will likely love this news, especially since 18% of Americans think that the president is a Muslim, and the outcry over his tepid backing of the ground zero “mosque.” Now the president’s opponents are going to turn all this Muslim love into a “community support” statistic. They shouldn’t.
These numbers should be used to illustrate the immense power and influence this president has in the Muslim diaspora, and to defuse radical Islamist rhetoric which claims the United States isn’t hospitable to those of their faith.
But, of course, that won’t happen, so let’s all just prepare for another deluge of conservative outcry over the president’s alleged religious leanings.
