Arcade Fire Dresses Like ‘Tron’ on SNL, Regine Takes Center Stage

Arcade Fire performed on SNL last night—and they were funny!

Last time Arcade Fire appeared on SNL Win Butler smashed his guitar into a pile of kindling at the end of “Intervention.” It was a little unclear whether he was trying to make some kind of statement a la Sinead O’Connor or whether he was just pissed—but whatever the case, it definitely wasn’t a party smash like Pete Townshend, and it came off the way the any “serious” performance at SNL inevitably does—super awkward.

So it was a relief to see Arcade Fire last night dressed liked ‘Tron‘ characters at a wedding, singer Régine Chassagne taking center stage and dancing like Blondie in the band’s second song “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).”

Their lead-off song, “The Suburbs” single “We Used to Wait,” was vintage Arcade Fire, with Win Butler ditching the guitar, bringing the mic out into the audience and cramming the camera with super-closeups. With the exception of a couple clunkers on the guitar, the band sounded masterful as always.

But maybe most out of character, they appeared in (and actually saved) an Andy Samberg skit about appealing to the UN for world peace. Funny idea, but the execution was pretty awkward until Arcade Fire stormed into the chamber, singing in a slick 80s-sounding dance riff and imploring Council members to “dance your troubles away.” Watch the highlights below.
