Take a listen to the new track from Lykke Li’s forthcoming album “Wounded Rhymes,” due out March 2nd.
“Love Out of Lust” almost begins like Joy Division’s “Atmoshere,” but then veers into Li’s own version of a beat-propelled crystalline cave anthem. And as good as “Atmosphere” was for its time (and still great even thirty years later), “Love Out of Lust” achieves its own anthemic brilliance, perhaps more through Li’s voice than the music.
Li doesn’t sound like anyone who is singing—not anyone with whom I’m familiar. It was her vocal qualities that initially caused my resistance to her music. But the Swede is winning me over with every new single.
Going from the lyrics of this one, it seems that Li is heavily relying on the river as a metaphor for “Wounded Rhymes.”
